Island Club and Spa offers pilates through individual sessions, duets, and classes of three students on the reformer equipment, as well as on the mat. Through the use of hundreds of exercises, the Pilates method builds strength in the core muscles of the body without building excess bulk for a longer and leaner physique. Pilates emphasizes correct body alignment and awareness along with improved flexibility and mobility, especially the spine.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How is Pilates different from other forms of exercise?
Pilates is different from most exercises out there because it’s non-impact and safe. It works on using the body as a whole, in all planes of motion whether lying on your back, on your stomach, on your side or kneeling. When you move the body, you’re trying to move from your core using stabilizing muscles to strengthen and ultimately protect you from injury. You’re also working the body very evenly and symmetrically, making sure one side is not working harder than the other.

Is Pilates a cardiovascular workout?
In the early learning stages pilates is slow moving because everything is being explained to you. Eventually, once you learn the workout and you’re going through the motions, it can become aerobic if you choose to make it that way. You can get a cardiovascular especially workout when you’re using the jumpboard equipment and also working on an advanced level because it’s more physical. You have to work towards it, but Pilates can be cardiovascular.

What Should I Wear?
It is helpful if you wear comfortable yet form-fitting exercise clothes. This way the instructor can make sure you are performing the exercises in the proper alignment. You may exercise in either your bare feet or socks with a rubber grip to prevent slipping.

How Quickly Will I See Results?
Joseph Pilates said “you’ll feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 and have a whole new body in 30 sessions.” Most of our clients start seeing results right away. But the key is consistency, 2-3x’s per week is best. Perhaps more important, clients feel better because pilates helps to relieve chronic back pain, knee and joint pain.

What are the benefits of Pilates?
Body awareness Stronger core Body control Improved posture Increased flexibility Better balance and coordination Compliments other forms of exercise.
